Suspect in custody following Stevens Point fire

STEVENS POINT – On March 23, the Stevens Point Fire Department and Stevens Point Police Department responded to a structure fire at 715 Smith Street, Stevens Point. The investigation quickly revealed that the cause of the fire was an act of arson and the suspect was identified as Blaine P. Johnson, 27.
The Stevens Point Police Department and the Portage County Communications Center were able to determine that Johnson had traveled to the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport after setting the fire.
Milwaukee County Sherriff’s Department was contacted and assisted Stevens Point Police in locating Johnson after he had purchased a one-way ticket to Atlanta, GA.
Johnson was apprehended at the airport and was transported back to Portage County on the evening of March 23.
Johnson is being held in the Portage County Jail on charges of arson, burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, two counts of bail jumping and violating a restraining order.
The Portage County Communications Center, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department, the Fond du Lac Sheriff’s Department, Lomira Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol assisted in apprehending the individual.
