STEVENS POINT – The city of Stevens Point has suspended issuing burning permits until further notice.
The decision mirrors the Wisconsin DNR actions on suspending permits in an attempt to limit first responders’ contact with the public and reduce the chances of COVID-19 exposure to the department’s staff and the community.
“This is one of the main calls we have during this time of year, and we would like people to commit themselves to social distancing and help us to stay healthy by preventing continued burning complaints. We are also highly discouraging fires for cooking and heating at this time,” read a Stevens Point Fire Department release.
A release from the city noted that residents should avoid burning debris in barrels, containers, or on the ground; burning in grassy or wooded areas; and having campfires for warming or cooking.
