Hang-up 911 call leads to car chase
For the Gazette
STEVENS POINT – An April 14 hang-up 911 call led Stevens Point police officers to a short vehicle pursuit in the evening hours.
At 9 p.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of Fremont Street for a welfare check after a 911 hang up call.
While officers were en route, it was discovered that a woman may have been held against her will on the 400 block of Union Street. Officers spoke to the woman at the Fremont Street residence. There, she alerted officers to a man driving a white sedan who may have been in danger.
Officers located the white sedan and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver fled the stop and initiated a short pursuit.
The driver eluded officers, but the sedan was located a short time later and the man was discovered hiding nearby.
A request for charges has been submitted to the Portage County District Attorney’s office for fleeing the police.
The SPPD believes this was an isolated incident and the public was and is not in any danger.
The incident is still under investigation. No further information is available at this time.
