City looks at hiring additional community media staff

STEVENS POINT – Council members passed a motion on April 22 that would allow the city to hire an additional limited-time employee (LTE) for the community media department.
The community media department is a two-person team focused on editing and filming city meetings and working on city radio station broadcasts.
Mayor Mike Wiza said that one employee of the department would be on a leave of absence for child care due to the COVID-19 virus until roughly July. Staff also noted that while on holiday, the only other employee is entitled to vacation time, which could leave the department without staff.
“This just allows us the flexibility to do it if we need,” Wiza explained.
Some council members noted concerns over bringing on an additional employee due to the costs and stated an existing employee working from home or a student could fill the media position.
Wiza said it was a possibility, but due to the position’s skill-set, it could be challenging to find existing staff members to fill the role.
