For the City Times

PORTAGE COUNTY – The 2020 P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was recently awarded to three area high school seniors – Natalie Hintz, Katie Schimke, and Kennedy Zarnke.

This $2,500 award is based on “excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.” The scholarship is open to young women who are citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States or Canada, who are graduating high school seniors at the time of application.

Hintz

Hintz is the daughter of Angela and Jeremy Hintz. She is a graduating senior at Stevens Point Area Senior High School. Natalie serves as captain of her figure skating team and gained leadership skills by attending a UW-Whitewater leadership seminar.

She has maintained high academic standing while enrolled in many advanced level classes. Shadowing an orthopedic surgeon has strengthened Natalie’s desire to pursue pre-med at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Schimke

Schimke is the daughter of Mike and Jackie Schimke. She is a graduating senior at Pacelli High School. Katie is highly involved in 4-H, training, showing, and sharing her abilities with horses. Her leadership skills have developed through volunteer efforts with the local humane society, horse summer camp, and with various clubs at Pacelli. Katie is considering pursuing creative writing at St. Norbert College or UWSP.

Zarnke

Zarnke is the daughter of Brandi Marquard. She is a graduating senior at Amherst High School. Kennedy has been a leader in student council and the team manager of the high school football team. An exceptional student, Kennedy is planning on pursuing Spanish and women’s studies at University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded on January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, IA, is an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes increased educational opportunities for women.

A STAR Celebration is planned for this summer.
