Pointer athletes receive USTFCCCA honors

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on May 19 that 10 members of the UW-Stevens Point indoor track and field team were awarded All-American honors.
Due to the cancellation of the NCAA Championships from the COVID-19 pandemic, all selected participants declared for their respective events were named All-Americans.
On the men’s side, Mike Ayensu-Mensah, Appleton; Matt Cieslak, Wilmot; Tom Kohn, Minnetonka, MN; Blake Orr, Waupaca; Jared Schrang, Oconomowoc; Evan Torgerson, Weston; Sam Welch, Manawa; and Calden Wojt, Marshfield, received All-American nods.
For the women, Larkin Hoepner, Eau Claire; and Briana Simonis, Rosholt, were named All-American.
Ayensu-Mensah was slated to compete in the high jump, where he was seeded No. 16. Kohn was the third-ranked participant in the triple jump. Orr was set to compete in the weight throw, while Schrang was due to compete in the 60-meter hurdles.
Welch picked up AA honors for his selection in the 400-meter relay. He received a second nod, along with Cieslak, Torgerson, and Wojt, as the quartet was set to compete in the 4×400-meter relay.
Hoepner and Simonis were each seeded No. 13 in their events, shot put and high jump, respectively.
The 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were slated to be held March 13-14 and were cancelled just prior to the weekend.
