City approves conditional use permit for former Fox Theater

STEVENS POINT – City leaders unanimously approved a conditional use permit allowing for an outdoor beer garden at the former Fox Theater located in downtown Stevens Point after a public hearing on Oct. 5.
“It’s already decided what the project is going to be,” said Mayor Mike Wiza. “We are moving along and checking off all the boxes for the proper meetings to get things in motion.”
Wiza noted that the building falls within a historic district requiring special approvals for construction to move forward.
Wildcard Corp./Opera House LLC is spearheading the project. The group added that the changes will improve the adjacent properties and offer the city needed public and private event space.
“Currently the area is not utilized and detracts from the look and feel of the adjacent properties. The relocated green space will be an improvement to the existing green space that is currently overgrown and damaged from the demolition of the auditorium space,” a Wildcard release stated.
When completed, the former theater will house a new business entity, The Opera House LLC., which will run the facility as a multi-purpose event and entertainment space. The intended use plan for the property centers on the creation of an open concept indoor/outdoor gathering space that highlights the unique history and cultural offerings of the local community.
