Tuesdays with the Mayor
A weekly update with Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza
By Taylor J. Hale
Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on the search for a new police chief and the city’s Halloween photo submission page.
Applications open for police chief
City leaders are looking for a new police chief. The police and fire commission will review applications and candidates, but Wiza noted the process could be lengthy.
“This is a national search, sorting through everything may take a few months,” Wiza said. “But we want to make sure we have the best candidate.”
A statement from the city reads: “The City of Stevens Point is seeking an innovative leader with exceptional skills to lead the Police Department. The position reports to the optional powers Police & Fire Commission. Applications accepted until enough qualified candidates have applied.”
Tom Zenner currently serves as the interim police chief.

City opens online Halloween photo page
The city government has launched its Halloween costume and decor photo page, allowing residents to post photos of their spooky attire and home decorations.
“You can also post pictures of your costumes, kid costumes, even pet costumes,” Wiza explained.
Wiza came up with the public Facebook photo gallery to offer an outlet for Halloween fun in light of the city’s recommendation to avoid trick-or-treating due to COVID-19. Winners will be selected and mailed a candy bar as Halloween approaches.
“It’s kind of like trick-or-treating directly to the mayor’s office,” Wiza joked.
Participants should “Like” their favorite costumes.
