On Dec. 21, city leaders unanimously passed a resolution declaring December as Hmong New Year Virtual Celebration Month.
The action follows communities around the nation, as the yearly event switches to an online format due to COVID-19.
The resolution read: “… the Mayor and Common Council of the City of Stevens Point declare December 2020 as Hmong New Year Virtual Celebration Month in Stevens Point, and encourages residents to celebrate the season by learning about Hmong history, commit to cultivating improved cultural understanding and relationships, and supporting our Hmong neighbors in Stevens Point and beyond.”
The Hmong New Year promotes educational, economic, and societal advancements for communities while providing a platform for community involvement.
The Hmong community in Stevens Point makes up nearly 5% of the total population.
