100 years: January 1921
Three new county officers assumed their duties the first Monday of January. Byron J. Carpenter, Stevens Point, succeeds J.R. Pfiffner, Stevens Point, as district attorney. P.E. Webster, town of Almond, succeeds Frank H. Timm, Stevens Point, as clerk of the circuit court, and John A. Berry, Buena Vista, succeeds W.I. Barager, Stevens Point, as sheriff.
Margaret Firkus, Stevens Point, appeared before Judge B.B. Park in circuit court and pleaded guilty to a charge of selling moonshine. She was given her choice of a $100 fine or six months in the county jail. The fine and costs, totaling $111.15, were paid by her husband.
More than 80 couples danced out the old year and welcomed the new at the Elks clubroom during the annual Sylvester ball.
20 years: January 2001
A fire that damaged an egg roll factory in the town of Stockton was under investigation. Authorities were called to the Tak Yee Products building and residence at 4477 and 4481 County Highway J, which were engulfed in flames. No one was injured in the fire. About 50 firefighters fought the blaze.
The Women and Infants Center at St. Michael’s Hospital launched an aggressive newborn screening program to test babies for hearing impairment, in an effort to reduce potential life-long disability.
10 years: January 2011
Three candidates were seeking the Stevens Point mayoral seat. Incumbent Andrew Halverson faced challengers Mike Wiza, District 4 alder, and Bill Yudchitz, architect.
At a special meeting of the Stevens Point Common Council, city leaders voted in favor of holding a February binding referendum on over $5 million in bonding that would finance the city’s downtown redevelopment plan.
Glenn Christison passed away at the age of 85. Christison joined the Army on Nov. 8, 1943, serving during World War II in France and Germany. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and two overseas service bars.
