One in custody after standoff in Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT – A 55-year-old man is in custody following a standoff in Stevens Point.
Stevens Point Police officers were called to the 700 block of Johns Drive on Jan. 29, shortly after 6:30 p.m. for a disturbance involving two men where shots were fired.
“The caller stated guns shots were heard prior to the disturbance but no one was injured. The male suspect remained in the residence while a male and female departed. When officers arrived the male suspect refused to come out, barricaded himself in the apartment. Phone contact was eventually made with the suspect who was very agitated, continuing to refuse to come out of the house, making threats for officers to have to shoot him,” a department release stated.
“Officers continued to have phone conversation, with no success of him surrendering. Stevens Point SWAT team and Portage County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team alternated their officers due to the weather elements.”
At 3:36 a.m. officials were able to access the apartment and take a 55-year-old male into custody.
“A gun was located within the residence,” police said.
The Stevens Point Police Department was assisted by Portage County Sheriff’s Office, UW Stevens Point Police, Plover Police Department, and the Stevens Point Fire Department.
