STEVENS POINT – Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on his Mike Drop Challenge and his newest Good Deed Doer.

Mike Drop Challenge Update

Wiza is still hard at work competing with Sheriff Mike Lukas in their weight loss challenge. The mayor admitted that both Lukas and he were up a few pounds at last week’s weigh-in on March 10.

“We were both up, but it could be because Girl Scout Cookies were delivered,” Wiza joked.

But Wiza isn’t laughing when it comes to getting fit. He joined the Be Active Wisconsin Community Challenge and is logging his active minutes daily. Wiza said he dusted off his old bike and brought it to The Point Area Bicycle Services to get new inner tubes to hit the streets as the weather warms up.

Good Deed Doers Award

Wiza presented SPASH junior Kaitlyn Goetz with a Good Deed Doer Award on March 5 for her contributions to the Salvation Army and the Humane Society of Portage County.

“Every Christmas, I save up for it, I do tie-blankets, I donate hygiene products, hats, and gloves for them,” Goetz said about the Salvation Army.

The warm-hearted student also donates food and supplies to the animal shelter and games and goods to area nursing homes.

“I just wanted to give back to people that needed it,” Goetz said. “I have stuff, but not everybody does, and not every pet has something they need, or (not) everyone has someone to visit them in the nursing home when they are sick.”
