Tuesdays with the Mayor: A weekly update with Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza
By Taylor Hale
STEVENS POINT – Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on the city’s consideration of No Mow May and his Mike Drop Challenge.
Wiza on No Mow May
Wiza said the city council will look into relaxing lawn care ordinances for the month of May to allow locals to grow out their lawns to provide needed habitat for pollinators.
“Basically, it would let residents not mow their lawn, to let the grass, dandelions, and other weeds grow for bees,” Wiza explained.
The ordinance change will be considered in April. Participating residents must register and will be issued a sign to post in their yard. Lawns must be back in compliance on June 1, 2021.
“A lot of other communities around the country do this, it’s an easy way to help,” Wiza said.
Mike Drop Challenge update
Mayor Wiza said that Sheriff Mike Lukas and he were both on track with their friendly weight-loss wager. The pair are over two months into their contest and have been steadily losing around two pounds per week over the last month, with some hiccups due to girl scout cookies.
“We were both down this week, but Mike cheated and got a haircut,” Wiza joked.
Both Mikes have been posting fun and engaging photos and stories about their weight-loss journey online. Join in and share your weight-loss goals and exercise tips on the Portage County Gazette Facebook page.
