The central Wisconsin area has seen a significant amount of catalytic converters this spring. While the thefts occur across all makes and models, the Toyota Prius appears to be targeted in the thefts.
When these thefts occur, it only takes a couple of minutes. Authorities believe the people responsible are working in a team of two – one uses a jack to lift up the vehicle and cut off the catalytic converter and the other is a look out.
Police are advising area residents to be on the alert for vehicles you may not recognize driving by your residence multiple times in a day, possibly planning their approach. Park your vehicle in a well-lit area or inside a building when possible.
If you do fall victim to a theft, limit walking around the vehicle and call the police.
