Tuesdays with the Mayor
Weekly update with Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza
By Taylor Hale
Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments.
Wiza touched on the changes coming to River Rendezvous, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and more.
Riverfront Rendezvous is returning, and Wiza said it will be better than ever this year.
“We are making changes to make it bigger and better than ever,” Wiza said. “For one, we are lighting off fireworks from floating platforms in the river next year, not Mead Park.”
Wiza said that by lighting off fireworks from the river, guests will be able to watch the displays from both Mead and Pfiffner Pioneer Park, where the show is traditionally held. The city will also be able to use eight-inch mortars instead of six-inch mortars providing a bigger boom and brighter display.
The added seating will also help with social distancing.
The city is working with the health department and the CDC to establish guidelines for guests and food vendors. A list of headliners will be out in the coming months.
Riverfront Rendezvous will take place starting in July.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Wiza established a city proclamation in honor of the month of awareness.
“I, Mike Wiza, Mayor of the City of Stevens Point, hereby join CAP Services’ Family Crisis Center and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual violence in proclaiming the month of April 2021 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” Wiza wrote. “I can’t stress how important this is, and everyone needs to take a role in this.”
If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual abuse, contact law enforcement or other agencies today.
