Tuesdays with the Mayor: An update with Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza

By Taylor Hale
STEVENS POINT – Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on his recent podcast appearance and 24 new fruit trees in the city.
Wiza’s Podcast Appearance
Wiza recently appeared on the Moving Stevens Point Forward podcast, hosted by John Jaeger of Point Forward Physical Therapy. Wiza touched on how he dipped his toe in local government, upcoming events, and how to stay active.
“There are tons of actionable opportunities to get you off the couch and doing something,” Wiza said.
Wiza’s appearance on the local podcast comes during his efforts to lose weight as part of his Mike Drop Challenge event, where he and Sheriff Mike Lukas are seeing who can shed the most pounds. Wiza hopes to see the community get active this summer, and recommends checking out the city’s numerous parks, off-leash dog areas, and other outdoor spaces.
City Plants Fruit Trees
City staff planted 24 fruit trees on April 19 with aid from the North Central Conservancy Trust (NCCT), Central Rivers Farmshed, American Transmission Company (ATC), and UWSP Students for Sustainability. The trees were planted at the NCCT property adjacent to Bukolt Park, located at the intersection of Old Wausau Road and Rachick Road.
The trees were purchased with funding from the American Transmission Company. Central Rivers Farmshed and UWSP Students for Sustainability will help maintain the trees.
City leaders hope locals and area wildlife enjoy the fruit over the coming years.
