How has covid affected learning
Stevens Point Area School Board talks remediation

The Stevens Point Area School Board is currently making plans for how to address student remediation in the 2021-22 school year.
Currently, it is unclear exactly how much the pandemic has affected student learning.
At April’s board meeting several parents addressed the board with concerns about their student falling behind.
After ACT scores come in, Superintendent Craig Gerlach said he is hoping bring a report to the board in May, with a more concrete picture of what student remediation will look like for the 2021-22 school year.
“We’re concerned about remediation next year but there are dollars coming through the federal grant,” he said.
Gerlach said those dollars will be used for “hiring resources next year specifically for, not only remediation, but dealing with the mental health issues.”
For now, summer school is students’ number one option for making up courses.
“We’re seeing a lot of people interested,” Assistant Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner said.
Hirsbrunner explained that students will not only have the option to take remediation courses, but also personal enrichment and outdoor physical activity courses which will give students the opportunity to connect with their peers.
Enrollment will close on May 14 at 4 p.m. The course catalog and registration is available at www.pointschools.net.
