Audubon presentation to feature former DNR ecologist

PORTAGE COUNTY – Why and when do leaves turn red and gold in autumn? How do birds know when it’s time to turn north or southward in migration? Why do witch hazel shrubs in Wisconsin wait to bloom until October?
Phenology is the scientific study of the timing of seasonal events in nature and what influences those events. Phenology urges us to pay attention to the changing world around us and can open our eyes to bigger changes happening within the ecosystems of Wisconsin.
The final Aldo Leopold Audubon Society presentation of the 2020-21 educational series will feature Randy Hoffman, a retired ecologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
“Randy will discuss why phenology is important and how it can be a gateway into knowing, understanding, and appreciating nature. He will also talk about local areas in the Stevens Point area to watch the annual changes happen – especially birding areas – and specifically address what’s happening in the Stevens Point area in mid-May,” an Audubon release stated.
“In addition to his most recent book, Randy wrote ‘Wisconsin’s Natural Communities’ and was the architect of identifying and preserving representative areas of all Wisconsin ecosystems for the state natural areas program. He was also the primary contributor to the DNR’s ‘Wisconsin Important Bird Areas.’”
