Aber Suzuki Center reaching fundraising goal

STEVENS POINT – Young musicians from the Aber Suzuki Center celebrated reached a $10,000 fundraising goal during their annual “Practice-A-Thon,” held April 5-14.
Students in the program obtain sponsorships from teachers, friends, and family members, raising funds through the number of minutes they practice. This year, roughly 200 students practiced over 60,000 minutes during the event.
“We have about 230 students in the program, and had about 200 participate this year,” said Aber Suzuki Center Director Ann Marie Novak.
The group celebrated by performing at the UW-Stevens Point sundial on April 25. The performance was followed by pouring buckets of ice water on faculty member Michelle Wenzel and Mayor Mike Wiza.
Young musicians screamed in excitement as the cold water was poured onto the pair.
“The water bucket idea evolved, or devolved, at a faculty meeting,” Novak laughed. “We knew it would be a good reward.”
Novak sees the “Practice A-Thon” as a way to encourage kids to set and accomplish goals. She also feels the event and performance help the young musicians connect with their community.
