Tuesdays with the Mayor: A weekly update with Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza
By Taylor Hale
STEVENS POINT – Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on a delay to in-person meetings, a letter to state legislators, and more.
In-person meetings delayed
Wiza said that in-person city meetings would be pushed back until late May or early June due to technical streaming difficulties. The issue has to do with the online stream that would be broadcasted for those wishing to watch the meetings from home.
Wiza expects the issue to be fully resolved in the coming weeks, at which point the committee, commission, and council meetings would return to a face-to-face format.
North Central Wisconsin River City Mayors
Wiza teamed up with Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg and Rhinelander Mayor Chris Fredrickson to create the North Central Wisconsin River City Mayors. A group dedicated to preserving the power of local municipal governments.
“One of the things we talked about was trying to assert the necessity, in our opinion, to keep local control. The state government has been whittling away at the authority of a local municipal government for decades. It takes away the ability to properly represent your community,” Wiza explained.
The group sent a letter to Wisconsin legislators, voicing their concerns on May 12. The trio is also working on a fundraising project that involves each mayor creating an original piece of artwork that will be auctioned off. More information on the fundraising event will be revealed later this summer.
National EMS Week
May 16-22 is National EMS Week. Stevens Point Fire Department Assistant Chief Joe Gemza said the weeks are dedicated to acknowledge EMS providers and the important work they do for communities nationwide. This year’s theme is “Caring for our Communities.”
“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to test EMS professionals like never before. First responders nationwide have selflessly put their lives on the line to serve and protect you,” Gemza said.
