Stevens Point School District mask update
By Olivia De Valk
STEVENS POINT – As of Aug. 23, all staff and students will be required to face coverings when in-doors at Stevens Point Area School District schools, buildings, and events.
The announcement came via an email to all district staff and families on Aug. 19.
The letter, signed by Superintendent Craig Gerlach explained that the requirement is in effort to preserve in-person learning for as many students as possible.
Students will be required to wear a face-covering during their school day except when they are eating or drinking, and outside for recess or other classroom activities.
As per CDC guidelines, all passengers and drivers on school buses will be required to wear masks, regardless of vaccination status.
The decision to require face-covering was made with the input of community members given at the Board meeting in August. At the meeting a number of parents stated that they did not want the board to require masks.
To all parents and faculty Gerlach wrote, “Please know this decision has not been made lightly. We take seriously our responsibility to provide students and staff the safest learning environment to the extent possible in these continued circumstances.”
A decision regarding face covering requirements for the month of October will be reviewed in late September.
