Pointers battle through grueling day to upgrade program-best start to 8-0

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women’s tennis team posted a trio of wins on Sept. 11 to improve their program-best start to 8-0. The Pointers swept Lawrence in the opener before taking down Ripon, 7-2, and UW-Superior in the finale, 8-1.
UWSP’s doubles swept the day. No. 1’s Barbara Covek (Barrington) and Jenna Koepp (Watertown) won all three by identical 8-2 scores. Faith Leithold (Onalaska) and Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids) dropped just five games on the day at No. 2. Grace Henes (McFarland) and Chloe Leithold (Onalaska) played at No. 3 with just five games lost all day.
In singles play, Koepp, Hess and Faith Leithold (Onalaska) all went 3-0. Koepp won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 against UW-Superior and No. 3 versus Ripon. She need a super-breaker against Lawrence to secure the sweep. Leithold dropped just two games over her three singles match victories.
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth) won both of her singles matches. She took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 against the Yellowjackets. At No. 6 versus Lawrence, Woelfel took the match by a 6-3, 6-0 final.
Abigail Ashley (Green Bay) and Chloe Moline (North Branch) were victorious in their singles matches. Ashley posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 versus UW-Superior. Moline rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 against Ripon.
Covek and Chloe Leithold (Onalaska) also earned a singles victory on the day.
