Tuesdays with the Mayor: Sept. 28
By Taylor Hale
STEVENS POINT – Mayor Mike Wiza sat down with Gazette staff to give an update on Stevens Point developments. Wiza touched on appointing a new District 1 alder and his mayoral art contest.
District 1 Alder Appointment
City leaders approved Marc Christianson to fill the role of District 1 Alder during the week of Sept. 20.
Christianson will take the position, filling in for former alder Tori Jennings after her resignation earlier this summer. Christianson will serve the remainder of the term and will be eligible to run for re-election.
Mayoral Art Contest
Wiza is working with Rhinelander Mayor Chris Frederickson and Wausau Mayor Katie Rosenberg on a mayoral art contest. The three will be competing by creating unique pieces of art and auctioning them off online. The piece that sells for the most will win, and the winner gets the total amount raised from selling all three pieces to fund a local project in their city.
The contest is intended as a fun way to help raise money and bring attention to local government, and Wiza is thrilled to participate. Wiza completed his paint-by-numbers abstract portrait of Elvis on Aug. 31, with Frederickson completing his work not long after, painting a dream-like scene of a dock running out into the water.
Wiza said that Rosenberg is playing it close to the chest, and hasn’t revealed her work yet, though Wiza suspects it will be impressive.
“I think she will have something really creative when she completes her project,” Wiza said.
Wiza added that Ideal Custom Frames and Gifts sponsored the framing for his piece.
All three pieces will be available to bid on online in early October. Follow the Gazette for updates on this story.
