STEVENS POINT – The city’s tourism commission approved $200,000 in funding to replace the turf in Community Stadium at Goerke Park, located at 1100 Minnesota Ave. The decision was made during a tourism commission meeting held on Sept. 27.
The commission unanimously approved the motion.
The current turf was installed in 2008 and has seen heavy wear. The Community Stadium at Goerke Field Fundraising Team is spearheading the project and is requesting $500,000 in funding from the city, with $200,000 coming from the tourism commission. The project’s total estimated price is $1.9 million dollars.
The original turf was paid for via a public and private fundraising partnership. The new project includes installation of a shock pad, replacement of the turf field, construction of a team and medical room with storage, remodeling of one existing locker room, and installation of entrance arches on Minnesota and Sims Avenue.
The team leading the project states that the changes will bring improved safety, increased event capacity, solidified field use reciprocity, and improved community partnerships by improved branding in the stadium and partnerships with the university and local school districts.
