STEVENS POINT – Long-term Police and Fire Commissioner Gary.
Wescott resigned from his role after 25 years of service. Wescott also served as mayor of the city from 1995-2007 and 2014-2015.
Wescott’s resignation was made effective on Dec. 22.
Wescott said he was proud of the work accomplished during his time serving the city, marking forward-thinking and advocating for public safety initiatives as key components of his time on the commission.
“We can all take pride in knowing we are served by some of the best trained professionals in the state. I extend my gratitude to past and present commissioners and police and fire personnel for their commitment to service. And special thanks to Legal Counsel Attorney Dean Dietrich for his professional legal guidance in commission matters,” said Wescott in his resignation letter.
Members of the police and fire commission gathered for a special meeting on Dec. 27 to fill Wescott’s seat with an interim candidate.
The commissioners selected Jerry Moore as the interim president.
Moore will hold the position from Dec. 27 to the group’s next reorganizational meeting in May.
“Thank you for your vote of confidence in me, as you know we all work as a team, and it’s about doing the right thing,” Moore said.
“We are all in this together, we are trying to make our community a safe place to live.”
Wescott did not cite a reason for his departure in his letter.
The city is now seeking candidates to fill the position starting in 2022. To learn more or apply, visit: StevensPoint.com.
