SPASH tennis hosts quadrangular for first match of season

STEVENS POINT — After playing in a scrimmage in Oshkosh on Aug 12, the SPASH varsity tennis team participated in a four-team event on Aug 17. The matches were held at SPASH, and the participating schools included De Pere, Waunakee, and Onalaska.
SPASH played its first match right away in the morning against De Pere. Eight courts were used for a mix of singles and doubles. De Pere ended up winning 4-3. The first match to get done was the No. 1 doubles match. The Panthers’ pair of Caroline Blakeman and Berit Borgnes lost in straight sets to De Pere, 6-1, 6-1. The other two doubles matches went in favor of Stevens Point. Abby Erwin and Jessica Kleman won their match in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7. Sophia Brandt and Lily Meeks won a lengthy match, 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.
De Pere took advantage of singles and won three of the four matches. Rylan Woytasik, Annika Borgnes, and Addison Jandrain lost their matches in two sets. SPASH’s No. 1 Tatum Thielman won a great match, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.
The Panthers played the other two matches of the day against Waunakee and Onalaska. SPASH fell 4-3 again versus Waunakee. Thielman won her second match of the day at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-1. Brandt won her singles match 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 after winning a doubles match against De Pere. SPASH doubles teams won one of three matches against Waunakee. Lily Meeks and Mali Palmer won in two sets, 6-1, 7-6.
The Panthers got one win on the day, a 5-2 advantage on Onalaska. A lot of players bounced back for their first win of the day. Woytasik, SPASH’s No. 2 singles player, won her match in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Jandrain also swept the first set in a two-set win as the No. 3 singles player. SPASH’s No. 1 Thielman went 3-0 in her matches in the event.
The doubles teams did similar things, winning two out of the three matches.
The Panthers finished 1-2 as a team in the quadrangular.
