UWSP hosts another successful Pink Week

STEVENS POINT — The University of Stevens Point football team has hosted the annual Pink Game for the last 11 years. This year is the 12th year of doing the week-long fundraiser for cancer. The Pointers hosted Simpson college on Sept 17 at Goerke Field. Fans packed the stadium wearing pink to support the cause and cheer on their local university.

The fundraiser spreads awareness for all types of cancer, and the football team plays a home game every season wearing pink on their jerseys. The event raised $50,127 this year, putting the 12-year total over $525,000. The Pointers pushed themselves over the .500 mark all-time in the game with a full house in attendance on Saturday. UWSP won the game easily, 35-14. There were plenty of activities going on throughout the game. Tents were set up to sell the 2022 Pink Game apparel, Stevens Point area youth football players got to play during halftime, and there was even a tire race with a couple of local officials. Mayor Mike Wiza, Stevens Point Area School District Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner, and Sheriff Mike Lukas participated in the race, each playing for a charity.
The Pointers kept the fans cheering all night. Brycen Cashin, a 2022 Pacelli graduate, led UWSP with 167 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The defense also showed its teeth, picking off Simpson College’s quarterback four times. Junior Tysen White had two of those interceptions.
