Friends of 2713, Stevens Point Police seek information on summer vandalism

STEVENS POINT – The Stevens Point Police Department and the Friends of 2713 continue to seek information on vandalism that occurred during the summer months at the Engine 2713 and Caboose 158 display.
“On July 31, I received a call from a Stevens Point Police officer that there had been some vandalism at the No. 2713 steam train display located on the city’s south side. I met the police officer at the train to see what had been damaged,” said Friends of 2713 Chairman John Kedrowski.
“The damage we found on Saturday was the worst and most malicious I have ever seen.
“Checking over the display, we found the coin mechanism for the train sound system was broken into and damaged. Luckily, the vandals were not able to get into the money box. Two windows in the engine cab had been badly damaged and one screen door on the caboose was broken.
“Prior to this damage an electrical box on the top to the tender was smashed exposing bare electrical wires, one of the chairs in the engine cab had been damaged and one of the caboose door panels had been cracked.”
The next weekend another window in the cab was damaged and the remaining chair in the engine cab was destroyed.
“The bad part was the broken items were damaged so severely that they can’t be repaired but need to be replaced,” explained Kedrowski.
Footage from the security cameras resulted in identification by the Stevens Point Police.
“I thought our troubles were over but the next weekend the vandalism continued,” recalled Kedrowski.
“A lower panel on one of the caboose doors that was previously cracked was now totally smashed in. One other window in the engine cab was broken making a total of five of the six windows being broken.
“Security camera footage was given to the police of the new damage, and we are hoping the police can identify the vandals.”
