SPASH Rugby dominates home opener against Muskego

By Jacob Heid
STEVENS POINT — The SPASH girls’ Rugby Club played its first home game of the 2022 season on Sept 24. The Panthers played against Muskego at the UWSP intramural fields, winning the game 27-7.

The fan turnout for the game was incredible to support a sport that maybe isn’t as well-known. Rugby is like a version of football but has plenty of differences. First, scores are five points, and a conversion kick is worth two points. SPASH had plenty of scoring opportunities in the win. The Panthers scored five touchdowns, which are called tries. Scout Spadoni led SPASH in scores with three, accounting for 15 of the 27 points. Maggie Behnke and Grace Kelly each scored once as well. Kelly also made one conversion kick.
The Panthers improved to 2-0 on the season with the win. SPASH has clicked on both sides of the field to start the season. The offense has 55 points in the first two games, and the team has only allowed seven points this season. The SPASH Rugby Club’s next match is against Green Bay on 10/1 at 10 a.m. The game is at the UWSP intramural fields. If you have other local sports stories, you can contact me at [email protected].
