One dead in Portage County accident

Update: The operator of the SUV was identified as Anthony R. Brock of Stevens Point.
PORTAGE COUNTY – One man has died in a Sept. 30 accident in Portage County.
Shortly before 12:30 a.m., the Portage County Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash on I-39 at the southbound 161 mile marker in Portage County.
“It was reported that a SUV was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and struck a southbound semi in the number one lane. Both vehicles entered the median and the SUV caught on fire,” a release from Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas stated.
“The operator of the semi was able to exit his vehicle and reported to deputies arriving on scene, that the driver of the SUV was pinned in the vehicle. Due to the extreme fire, the operator of the SUV did not survive.
“The operator of the SUV is a 71-year-old male from Stevens Point, and he was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The operator of the semi was a 54-year-old male from De Pere. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the Stevens Point Aspirus Hospital.”
The Portage Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Stevens Point Ambulance, Stevens Point Fire Department, Hull Fire Department, and the Plover Fire Department.
The Stevens Point Police Department and the University of Stevens Point Police Officers also assisted with traffic control. The Portage County Highway Department and the Stevens Point City Streets Department assisted with rerouting of I-39 traffic. The State Patrol responded with a technical crash investigator.
This accident remains under investigation.
