STEVENS POINT – Take a trip back in time to the Roaring 20s during the Portage County Historical

Society (PCHS) 2023 Annual Meeting.

“Flapper Fashion” a special presentation by Dr. Leslie Bellais, sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution Stevens Point Chapter, will look at how the women of the 1920s pushed the boundaries of fashion and culture.

Flappers, as these young women were known, scoffed at conventional standards of behavior, threw aside the corsets and burdensome clothes of their mothers for shockingly short, sleeveless, androgynous dresses.

Formerly the curator of costume and textiles at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Bellais will put the flapper in context of fashion history and illustrate how the flapper style dramatically changed women’s clothing from everyday clothes to wedding dresses to underwear.

“It’s fun to compare clothing nowadays to that of 100 years ago,” says PCHS Executive Director John

Harry, “Plus, it’s a great chance for the community to come get to know the work we do as your local

historical society.”

The meeting takes place April 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Pineries Room at the Portage County

Public Library and is open to the public.

The presentation will take place after a short agenda of PCHS .For more information, contact PCHS Executive Director John Harry at [email protected]
