Panthers tennis sets the tone in home opener

STEVENS POINT – The Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) varsity boys’ tennis team opened its conference season on a high note on Apr. 13.
A visit to SPASH by Wausau East in the April heat allowed the Panthers to pick off the Lumberjacks with a sweep.
Four singles and three doubles teams faced off throughout the afternoon.
SPASH finished with a commanding win, beating Wausau West 7-0.
No. 1 singles player Matt Davis played through his match with little stress. Davis cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The No. 1 Panther duo of seniors Jack Diekelman and Carter Gaede were the first to finish the first set, quickly winning 6-2.
They finished their match with a 6-3 second-set victory.
The three other singles players only lost a combined four games.
SPASH senior Marek Woytasik finished Wausau East’s Isaac Harding in two sets, 6-1, 6-2, to gain another point for the Panthers at No. 2 singles.
Mason DeBot nearly swept at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Freshman Carson Slowinski rounded out singles play with a clean sweep. Slowinski claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wausau East’s Arjay Yang.
The No. 2 and 3 doubles teams followed suit for SPASH.
Senior Brock Chandonais and junior Jacob Lutgen took control of their match early, winning 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Winston Hill and Adam Rust wrapped up doubles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
A senior-heavy team starts its run at a three-peat of the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
