STEVENS POINT – Silversmith Joan North and landscape artist Dan Sivek harmonize their talents as the featured artists at Q Artists Cooperative when their “Harmony” exhibit opens on May 2.

“North has been working with a line of dyed leather cord with vibrant colors which remind her of a joyful Crayola box of color often found in semi-precious stones she uses in her jewelry. Joan wondered if these two very different media — soft, organic leather and hard, immobile metal — might find some harmony. And they did. North selected semi-precious stones to harmonize with these leather colors to make a new line of necklaces,” a gallery release stated.

“After 25 years as the Dean, College of Professional Studies at UWSP, North shifted her career into silversmithing fine jewelry. During this time her jewelry has been juried into numerous exhibits, art galleries and museums around the country. Many of her pieces are available at Q Artists Cooperative.

“Sivek considered many aspects of harmony: color harmony, mathematical and spiritual harmony, music harmony, harmony with nature, harmony with the universe, and harmony with self. The result of these explorations will be revealed at this featured Gallery Q show.

“Art and nature have been themes running throughout Sivek’s life. From sketching wild animals in elementary school to a commissioned teacher portrait in high school to a museum-methods minor in college to creating art in a wide variety of mediums, making art has been a passion for Sivek.”

Early retirement from a career in environmental education with Wisconsin DNR and UW-Stevens Point allowed him Sivek to pursue art more seriously.

“He took intensive workshops from local and national masters in colored pencil, plein air, serigraphy, oil, acrylic, watercolor, cold wax, woodcut and soft pastel,” the release added.

This show will highlight the theme of “harmony” in his works.

“Harmony” exhibit runs May 2 – June 23, with the opening reception on Friday, May 5, 5-7 p.m., at Q Artists Cooperative, 1108 Main St., Stevens Point.
