Stevens Point installs public piano for fourth year

STEVENS POINT — Mayor Mike Wiza announced June 7 that a public piano has been installed in downtown Stevens Point for the fourth year in a row. The piano is located at the transit stage in a public space near Guu’s on Main. The donated piano was painted by Tina Lepak this year and will remain under the small shelter for the season.
“This is such a cool project each year. People love this opportunity for public music,” said Mayor Wiza. “I’ve seen people of all ages playing and many more people just listening. The Governor was just here talking about our record tourism. This piano plays a small role in that.”
The piano is protected from most of the weather, but as the season moves on, it will fall out of tune. The piano is donated by a member of the public each year. The only expense the city has is labor to move and install the piano.
“We’d love to find someone who can help us keep it tuned every few weeks,” Wiza continued. “But, it is a donated piano and it won’t sound great forever.”
The piano is available for anyone to play and the city would love to share pictures or videos of users or listeners. If you have a piano in decent shape that you would like to donate for next year, contact the Mayor’s Office at 715-346-1570.
