Most high school athletes have a busy schedule during the school year while balancing school and sports.
SPASH senior Abby Jossie gets one last opportunity to play three sports in high school.
After an ACL injury that kept her sidelined last year, she’s back starting with the fall volleyball season.
Here is more on the SPASH senior.
Is there a nickname that your family or friends call you?
“My family and friends call me Abs. There’s not really a reason why, but it’s a shorter name for Abby, so it rolls off the tongue.”
How have you grown in volleyball throughout your time playing? What’s been the most valuable lesson?
“I learned that not only your effort on the court but off the court is just as important. Last season, I unfortunately could not play due to an ACL injury. During that time, I had to find my role on the team without playing. I was a manager, and I learned that being a good teammate and communicating my view from the sidelines could help the team succeed. My most valuable lesson is to not take anything for granted and to enjoy every moment because you never know when it could be your last opportunity.”
Do you play other sports besides volleyball?
“I am in two other sports: basketball and track & field. Each sport provides a different experience and something new to offer, so I would say my favorite is the one I am participating in during the season.”
How has your sister Emma helped you grow in the sports you play?
“Some of my best times were playing with my sister. She always pushes me to be a better player and an even better person. She has always been a good role model for me growing up, not only as an athlete but as a leader.”
Do you have a favorite vacation that you’ve taken with family or friends?
“My favorite vacation was to Florida with all of my extended family. We stayed in Orlando for a week and got to visit Disney, Busch Gardens, the beach, and of course, we worked in some pool days.”
What are some of your goals for this upcoming fall season?
“I always strive to get better both individually and as a team. My goal is to help my team compete in every game to win a conference title. Since this is my final season, I want to enjoy it and leave it all out on the floor. It is important for me to show younger players how to be a good leader and a great teammate.”
Do you have plans for after high school?
“I plan to attend a four-year university and possibly play basketball. I want to pursue an education in science, but I’m undecided on a specific major. I have not determined where I will be attending school in the fall.”
